What if the most honest way to write your life story is through myth, metaphor, and imagination?
Storyworld Memoir Magic is cyclical journey to write imaginative pieces that honor the factual truth of your life while expressing its deeper, symbolic truth through story.
In fiction, we always blend in pieces of ourselves, whether we want to or not. And in memoir, we inevitably shape and select, and our imagination will fill in the gaps.
However, in Storyworld Memoir Magic, we do both consciously.
What if 5th grade recess took place in a forest of mirrors?
What if your season of grief happened in a locked library?
Maybe your so-called dream job was a kingdom that only appears at dusk?
What if the moment you found your voice was a seashell that spoke back?
Or that breakup took place in a house where butterflies lived in the floors?
For years, Storyworlding has helped writers break ground in fiction by doing something radical:
Writing without a rigid plan, outline, storyboarding, or form.
We approach writing in a different way. We begin with image. Atmosphere. Fragments.
In short, we let the world lead.
In past Storyworlding journeys, writers created beloved word-fragments, short stories, and mythic narratives by bypassing logic and entering the intuitive, untethered realm of story.
Now we turn that method inward.
In Storyworld Memoir Magic, you apply world-building principles to your own life.
Instead of asking, “What happened?”
You ask, “What realm was I in?"
Four consecutive six-week sessions make the magic happen, each focusing on writing and exploring different times and textures from your life. Classes meet weekly on Tuesdays, 7:00-9:00 Eastern Time (starting time 6pm Central, 5pm Mountain, 4pm Pacific)
Here's a look at the realms we will be playing with:
March 31, April 7, 14, 28, May 5, 12 (no class April 21)
The earliest layers of your life: the first environments, impressions, and moments where your story began taking shape.
May 19, 26, June 2,9, 16, 23
The in-between spaces of life; the crossings where a choice, opportunity, loss or realization changed the direction of your story.
July 7, 14, 21, 28, Aug 11, 25 (no class Aug 4 or Aug 18)
The deeper layers of memory; the places where complicated feelings, hidden truths, and the stories beneath the surface reside.
Sept 8, 15, 22, 29, Oct 6, 13
The lingering traces of experience; the quiet moments that seem small but hold a story and echoes that remain long after a moment has passed.
In each Series, you will -
✨ Gather your memory fragments and figments
✨ Translate your lived experiences into symbolic environments
✨ Write pieces that braid literal truth with metaphorical landscapes...and make you gasp
✨ Unearth recurring themes and hidden mythic patterns
By the end of this journey, you will have an abundance of luminous memoir pieces: fragments or chapters that feel expansive, layered, and truer than fact alone.
Because your life is not just what happened, it is what it meant. And meaning lives in worlds....Storyworlds!
What if your first month away from home took place in a busy metropolis with no street signs?
What if looking for a new apartment was an expedition through a foggy harbor?
Maybe that special friend was a purple rose in a garden that only blooms at midnight?
Or perhaps that trip took place on a bridge made of lanterns?
Do I need writing experience?
Not at all. This process is about expression, not expectation. All that is needed is a desire to be open to doing things differently...including tossing out what you think you know about creative writing.
Do I need to have taken Storyworlding classes previously?Previous Storyworlding classes, or other writing classes with Marney, provide a great foundation but are not required. You'll receive videos to introduce you to some favorite Storyworlding tools, so you'll be able to hop right in.
Is this therapy?
No. While this process invites you to explore memories, experiences, and the meaning you make of them, it is not therapy or psychological treatment. Think of it more like looking at your life through a kaleidoscope—with a little magic-wand glitter—using creative storytelling, metaphor, and imagination.
Sometimes meaningful memories or emotions may arise as you write. If something tender comes up, you are always encouraged to pause, take care of yourself, and seek support from a qualified therapist or mental health professional if needed. This course is designed as a creative writing and self-reinvention experience, not a substitute for counseling, diagnosis, or mental health care.
You are always in charge of how deeply you go and what you choose to share. Your story belongs to you.
Will I complete my memoir?
You will definitely write. What you will write is left to be discovered. There are worlds to discover, and they will guide you to the form of your collected writings at the end of the 4 series.
How can I know if this is for me?
Here are a few clues....
You'd love to create something truly unique from your lived experience
You like the idea of capturing your stories, but writing in a traditional "memoir" form feels overwhelming, intimidating, or heavy
You've journaled for years but you sense there's a more artful way to explore your life
You are curious about blending the craft of writing with an inward process
You want to describe the feelings that don't have words
You're drawn to reshaping some of your life experiences...who knows what you can see through a different lens?
You might like to share your life stories (either with those closest to you, or with a wider audience) but you'd love the process to be wildly creative instead of cumbersome
This page is stirring something in you....
You are not here to summarize your life. You're here to reveal its hidden worlds. Let's see what's waiting for you...
