Welcome to your new Artellagram! Thanks for joining in our new format. Since my book, Creating Time: Using Creativity to Reinvent the Clock and Reclaim Your Life, hits bookstores nationwide next month, I thought it would be fun to do a bit of "time traveling" and share an article I wrote which became the basis for our very first e-course, called "Goalar Energy":

Self-help books about goal achievement are all over the place. These books have made an enlightening impact on many people, sharing strategies for articulating, planning and reaching goals in a succinct, linear fashion. All those impressive books with inspiring anecdotes and step-by-step advice for achieving goals are out there, lining shelves like tantalizing cookies in rows. Why didn't they work for me?

I kept looking for the right Formula For Success, wanting to follow suit of so many others who got these techniques to work. I guess what I needed was a book on "goal-planning for the right brained and scatter-brained", and I couldn't find it.

As with most of our journeys, I didn't have to find a book to learn something that my own imagination already knew. One day, when I heard someone use the term "laser-focused goals", it suddenly occurred to me that perhaps what I needed was just the opposite.

Instead of reaching for my goals with a laser beam, perhaps a better image for me was a sun beam. I needed to reach in many different directions, all at once. Trying to channel my vision into a direct line of specific actions and benchmarks felt limiting, oppressive, and confusing to me. Perhaps I didn't need to force my energy in one single, perfectly-honed direction. Maybe all I needed to do was simply shine...and trust that forces greater than me would take care of exactly where the light fell.

In looking ahead, I don't really know where I want to be, but I have a pretty clear view of who I want to be. Where I'll end up is no more limited than the endless tangles of the sun.

It's been 10 years since I wrote that that article, and I've been delighted to observe that our entire culture and society are gradually evolving, finally beginning to embrace a different paradigm of productivity and a new sense of time. Through the years, I've continued to learn even more about how the traditional, linear approach to goals simply doesn't work best for most creative spirits. Even more significantly, I've learned what does work when we fully embrace our creativity and the multi-directionality of our goals, spreading our energy out like rays of the sun. For example, take a look:

One of the projects in the Artella e-course, Mixed Media ME-flections: 30 Art Projects To Change Your Life, is to create a self-portrait in which you juxtapose your own image with a vintage portrait to create a mixed-media piece with a meaningful statement or theme. Simply find a vintage photo that piques your curiosity and combine it with a modern photo of yourself in a collage that tells a story or present a theme, such as the example shown here.

Old photos inhabit such mystery, and are ideal for this project! You may want to start this process by finding an image of another person, and then using that as your basic inspiration. Allow that image to inspire the themes or concepts that your piece could represent. For example, I found a wonderful vintage photo of an woman who looked so delightfully intent and serene. The term, "quiet joy" came into my mind, and inspired my self-portrait.
art.

Here's one more inspiring technique to try which can be really fun: if you get stuck as you're working, ask for advice from figure in the vintage portrait with you. This may sound silly, but it really works! For example, you could "ask" this image questions, like...

  • What do you think I should do now?
  • What colors would you like to be around you?
  • Any suggestions as to what I should do for the border?
  • What am I not seeing about this piece?
  • What could I add to make this piece more meaningful?
You can even take this line of questioning to the next level, and ask questions not only about the art, but about your life as well:

  • What advice do you have for me?
  • What am I not seeing about my life?
  • What will support me most?
  • What is the best expression of my soul?
  • How can I make a difference?
In this way, this person - whoever it is - becomes an imaginary Muse for you, whispering words of wisdom and inspiration. Of course, all the answers will come from within you. But sometimes our imaginations need a little push! By pretending that this other figure can "speak", you're opening up your imagination to a new kind of dialogue that can be quite powerful and satisfying. Give it a try!

Make Change with Your Muse: Mixed Media Art Projects to Attract Prosperity and Change in Your Life

With all that's going on in the world these days, it's time to release our stresses about money, and instead bring in our joy. As so many have learned by now, we attract more of what we are... so if we stress and worry, it becomes that much more difficult to get anything but MORE of the stress and worry we are putting out. We may not get prosperous overnight, just because we say a few positive things, but the fact is, it's only WHEN we are positive, full of gratitude and joy, that we can be in a place to receive more. The science behind this is extensive, but even old-fashioned common sense tells us that if we want something to change for the better, we better change something!

If your life isn't just how you want it, then something needs to change! Make Change with Your Muse is a 30-day adventure that brings you on an energizing, unforgettable journey, as you create beautiful art projects while completely "changing" the way you experience prosperity and abundance in your life.

For today's "In the Studio" Interview, I'm delighted to present Donna Mills, who, in addition to being a Certified ARTbundance(TM) Coach, is also a gifted painter, a certified FranklinCovey coach, and has recently completed training in her newest passion, hand analysis. Donna's gifts of connection and pure energy shine through all of these pursuits, and I know you will enjoy getting to know her better!

Artella: What led you to become a Certified ARTbundance Coach?

Donna: I'd only been involved with the Artella community for a short time when the inaugural ARTbundance Coach Training program was launched in 2008, and the idea of working with Marney was irresistible. She is such a great blend of creativity and sound business sense! I had completed other coach training programs (FranklinCovey and Self-Management), which I loved, but those programs were based on what I'd describe as a 'left brain' model. ARTbundance coaching seemed to be unique in its approach. In addition, it promised a supportive community and connections that would be sustainable after certification. ARTbundance has provided me with a great community. There are awesome people out there who are applying the benefits of the training to all different types of businesses, and that's exciting to see.

Artella: ARTbundance is based on nine ARTbundance Principles. Do you have a favorite Principle, or one that you really enjoy activating in other people? Which one, and why?

Donna: Creating usually gets me into a good mood, so, regardless of how I am feeling when I start, creating never fails to lift my spirits. I feel joy when I put beautiful colors onto paper. I love sorting through my treasure-trove of supplies, looking for just the right bit of this or that. I can't help but feel good when I arrange a collage lay-out and see something new come from things that already exist in another form. I guess it is a way of becoming child-like, because the process is so enjoyable, and I find I can "lose myself" in being creative.

You can read the rest of Donna's interview, here

The ARTbundance Certification Training (ACT) is now in session. The next session will be scheduled later this year. You can learn more about ACT and request an application when the next session is announced, here

Over the years, we've shared almost 100 Quotz Crystals: uplifting words that you can print out and keep with you as little gems of inspiration. We asked Artella Team Members for their favorite quotes that we can share with Artellagram readers.

This gem was shared from Irina Naskinova, Artella's fantastic technical ace and lead programmer, but who, amazingly, truly exemplifies the sincere spirit and scope of what Artella is about. So much of what we eagerly aspire to do for the creative world ultimately finds its way relying on Irina to help make it actually work. :-) But in addition to being the creative solution-provider, she is a truly remarkable, and so very inspiringly authentic, woman. Interacting with her often feels like a beautiful walking meditation...dynamic and yet calming and good for the soul.

We thought that Irina's suggested quote was perfect for our readers who are inspired by creative approaches to self-discovery and awareness.
