Creativity Tip:
Wired Winglets
Artellagram 11-9-13

At this time of year, it seems like everything speeds up. Between "___ more days till Christmas" signs already lurking around and Hanukkah arriving right after Thanksgiving this year, it can feel like we're on an episode of Candid Camera or Punk'd, and someone has been playing with the calendars. :-)

On the other hand, I do love the holiday season and the quickening pace can actually be motivating. Yet I can't deny that the invariably sped-up season does a number on my adrenal system. If I had to choose a word to describe how I feel, the word that comes to mind is: wired. In a well-timed typo, I wrote, "weird", which is accurate as well. :-)

In the ARTbundance coaching approach, one way that we approach ARTsignments -- self-discovery exercises infused with creativity -- is to take the client's words literally. We listen to what the client is saying and imagine how her words might be used in a transformation art project.

So...how might we transform the word "wired" into an art project that can be supportive? I love making these Wired Winglets...little fairies made from wire and paper. The process is a fairly mindless one for me that is relaxing and fun. Here are some suggested steps:

  1. Start with a wire "form". I like to double or triple the wire by folding it on itself for a more stable base. I start by making a head shape with wire and twisting at the neck, and then creating the body, arms and legs. Since everything will be covered by paper, it doesn't matter if the wire form is messy, which is one reason I like this project!

  2. Take small strips of paper and wrap them around the wire body. This is a great way to use all those tiny little paper scraps! Wrap around in any fashion, just be careful not to bend the wire. Glue down the ends of the papers and then grab another strip and keep wrapping. Relax and have fun! Feel your "wirey-ness" lessen as you allow yourself to enjoy the simple repetition of wrapping and gluing.

  3. Continue wrapping as you like, to "build up" the fairy to the designed thickness.

  4. Add wings and other adornments to your pleasure.
That's how we can turn "wired" to "winged"! A fun way to relax...and they make cute holiday gifties, too.
